Today we have released an update to the Eye-Fi Manager software (version 1.5) and Eye-Fi Card firmware (version 1.0741), which together add a new feature to the Eye-Fi Card called “Smart Boost”.
The “Smart Boost” update makes wireless photo uploads with the Eye-Fi Card more efficient and improves the upload experience by enabling the Eye-Fi Card to intelligently determine the most efficient way to upload your photos where you want them.
If you are one of the many Eye-Fi users that uploads photos to the web and to your computer, we think you are going to appreciate this new update. In the past, the Eye-Fi Card would first upload your photos from the camera to the Web, where they would then be sent to your online photo-sharing site and to your computer via the Web-based Eye-Fi Service.
With “Smart Boost”, when your computer is on and you have the Eye-Fi Manager software running, the Eye-Fi Card will direct photo transfers through your Wi-Fi to your computer, allowing the Eye-Fi Manager software to relay the photos to the Web. This approach leverages the speed of your local network to transfer photos from the camera, reducing card activity and conserving battery life. The first one or two photos may still upload to the web, but once the “Smart Boost” features of the Eye-Fi Card finds the Eye-Fi Manager software on your computer, subsequent transfers will be directed to your computer and all other upload to the web will be managed by the Eye-Fi Manager software.
When your computer is off, the Eye-Fi Card will automatically send photos from the camera, through your home Wi-Fi network, to the Web-based Eye-Fi Service. The Eye-Fi Service will then deliver images to a photo-sharing site and to your computer when it is eventually turned on. In this approach, the speed at which images are transferred from the camera is paced by the home’s Internet connection.
To get “Smart Boost” you will need to update your Eye-Fi Manager software and Eye-Fi Card firmware. Update your Eye-Fi Manager software by choosing “Check for Updates” from the Eye-Fi icon in the Apple Menu Bar or the Windows System Tray and follow the instructions. To update your Eye-Fi Card’s firmware, just insert your Eye-Fi Card in your computer with the Eye-Fi Manager running and follow the instructions.
