An Eye-Fi Christmas Story

Christmas morning when everyone was opening presents and taking pictures, we saw a real spike in traffic to the Eye-Fi Service and we reported that we were experiencing heavy traffic resulting in slow response and uploads. This spike really exceeded our expectations and as a result some Eye-Fi users experienced registration issues or slow uploads.

Murphy’s law was in full effect yesterday. We underestimated the spike in volume and as a result our servers were inundated with requests preventing the Eye-Fi Service from keeping up with demand. We made changes ahead of time in anticipation of increased demand but the level of activity far exceeded our estimates. The good news is that by yesterday afternoon we were able to resolve the problems and in the process have learned a lot. As a result, server capacity was quadrupled to accommodate increased traffic and several back-end server changes are in place. We are also reviewing our system architecture to improve future performance during periods of peak demand.

Thanks for bearing with us and from the entire Eye-Fi crew, we apologize for any inconvenience or frustration the problems yesterday may have caused.
